What Caused the Empereon Constar Data Breach?

The Empereon Constar data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, Empereon Constar’s filing with the Attorney General of Maine provides some important information on what led up to the breach. According to this source, on July 22, 2024, Empereon Constar learned that the computer system at a partner company showed signs of unauthorized access. In response, the partner company secured its system and then launched an investigation to learn more about the incident and what, if any, consumer data may have been leaked.

Through this investigation, the unnamed partner company determined that an unauthorized actor had gained access to an archived data set containing a limited number of Constar files, including those containing confidential consumer information.

After learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, Empereon Constar reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted. This process was recently completed, and on September 27, 2024, Empereon Constar sent out personalized data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the recent data security incident. While the data breach letter on the Attorney General of Maine’s website doesn’t specifically list the compromised data types, the personalized data breach letters should provide victims with a list of what information belonging to them was compromised.
