Clean Energy Meets Market Turbulence: A Week of Transformation

  1. China’s EV Milestone: China will hit its 2035 EV sales target by 2025, a decade early—signaling the rapid end of the traditional ICE cars, at least in China.
  2. New York’s Renewable Surge: Contracts for 23 renewable projects add 2.3 GW of clean energy capacity. Moreover, also in New York, the Climate Change Superfund Act is now law, and New York has fired a shot that will be heard round the world. While lawsuits will follow, the companies most responsible for the climate crisis will be held accountable.

Good read: Data centers are pushing our power grids to their limits with demands ranging from 75MW to 2GW+. While innovative solutions like SMRs, small fusion, and off-grid systems are often discussed, they come with significant cost and feasibility challenges. The most practical approach? Integrating with the grid using natural gas, hybrid renewables, and energy storage. This path, however, will necessitate close collaboration with utility providers. Great insights from Michael Liebreich of BloombergNEF on navigating these complex energy landscapes:

In the end, the tech titans will find out that the best way to power AI data centers is in the traditional way, by building the same generating technologies as are proving most cost effective for other users, connecting them to a robust and resilient grid, and working with local communities. More, in other words, of what the best of them are already doing.
