Following the launch of the public testing phase on 21 January 2019, the EU Settlement Scheme (Scheme) fully launched on 30 March. We have set out the key updates below:

  • Citizens of Norway, Iceland, Lichtenstein, and Switzerland can register under the Scheme.
  • The registration fee of £65 for adults and £35 for children is waived.
  • Eligible EEA national applicants based outside of the UK can also make an application under the Scheme as of 9 April 2019.
  • Eligible non-EU national family members can also apply from abroad provided that they have a valid UK residence card or a permanent residence card.
  • There is a new EU Settlement Scheme family permit route which allows non-EEA national family members to accompany or join EEA nationals who have been granted leave under the settlement scheme. This new family permit will be valid for six months.
  • The date by which EEA nationals must have been continuously resident in the UK, and certain family relationships will need to have been formed, will be 31 December 2020 if the UK leaves with a deal, or 29 March 2019 if the UK leaves without a deal. However, this predates the UK’s and EU’s agreement to extend Article 50 and this date may be subject to change depending on the ultimate date of the UK’s departure from the EU.
  • Those living on the Isle of Man or Channel Islands can apply.
  • It is possible to submit national ID cards as identity documents for EEA nationals, and biometric residence cards for non-EEA family members.
  • Administrative reviews can now be made from outside the UK.
