The Coronavirus: What Employers Should Be Doing to Prepare for Emergencies

Employers are struggling to determine how to respond to the 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) outbreak, which, while originating in China, has swiftly turned into a perceived international crisis. The coronavirus poses particular concerns for employers for several reasons, including the need to protect employees who may be at risk and the need to address employee concerns. This session will address wage and hour concerns, health and safety obligations, reasonable accommodations, leaves of absences, employee communications, and limitations on what employers can do when emergencies arise.

Animals in the Workplace: What You Need to Know

Many employers are now confronting difficult ADA issues relating to animals in the workplace. This session will give you the information you need to know what animals qualify as service animals and how an employer can determine if an animal is a service animal. This session will also address reasonable accommodations and the ADA’s interactive process, with a focus on unique questions such as whether you must provide food, a relief area, someone to walk a service animal, or breaks for walking. You will learn best practices for responding to an employee’s request to bring a service or emotional support animal to work, and potential conflicts with other employees who are allergic to or afraid of dogs.

Lessons from Litigation: Keeping Your Employment Decisions from the Jury

No employer likes the idea of facing a jury in a discrimination or retaliation lawsuit filed by current or former employees. There are steps employers can take to reduce the likelihood of their employment decisions facing scrutiny by a jury. This session will review tips and best practices that have the greatest impact on avoiding litigation or ending it before the case reaches the jury. Through discussion of hypothetical cases and audience participation, this session will examine common mistakes to avoid along with proactive steps employers can implement to keep their employment decisions out of court.
