Judge Berens graduated from Harvard University in 1998 with a bachelor’s degree in linguistics and a master’s degree in comparative literature. She went on to earn a law degree, with honors, from the University of Chicago Law School. She started her law career as a legal clerk for a federal Court of Appeals judge in Alaska and then practiced civil litigation at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher for 10 years in Palo Alto, California. Judge Berens became an assistant United States Attorney for the Western District of Michigan in 2012 and served in that role until she was appointed to the federal court on November 2, 2019.

Judge Jantz graduated from Dartmouth College in 1999 and from the Northwestern Pritzker School of Law in 2002. After graduation, she clerked for the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals’ Staff Attorneys’ Office from 2002 to 2004. Judge Jantz then practiced at Sidley Austin LLP in Chicago, focusing on class actions and product liability. From 2008 to 2019, she served as an attorney with the Federal Defender Program for the Northern District of Illinois. Judge Jantz was appointed to the federal court in 2019 and was sworn in on February 10, 2020. Judge Jantz has taught and lectured nationally on e-discovery, electronic case management and review, and mobile and digital devices and data. Judge Jantz has also served on many court committees including the 7th Circuit Advisory Committee on Circuit Rules, the Defender Services’ Automation Working Group, and the 7th Circuit’s E-discovery Pilot Project.
