What Caused the Exeter Finance Data Breach?

The Exeter Finance data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. And, at his early point, Exeter’s filing with the Attorney General of Texas provides only limited information on what led up to the breach.

What we know at this point is that Exeter Finance reported an incident to the Texas Attorney General, affecting confidential information that had been entrusted to the company. While it may be that hackers targeted Exeter in a cyberattack, that isn’t necessarily the case. It may be the case that Exeter is reporting a breach that affected information it provided to a third-party vendor.

Regardless, after learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, Exeter Finance reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted. While the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include your name, Social Security number, driver’s license number, financial information, address, and date of birth.

Often, companies will send personalized data breach letters and notify state attorney general offices at the same time. However, the timeframe for the Exeter Finance data breach could be different.
