What Caused the Data Breach Affecting Express Services?

The Express Services data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, Express’s filing with the Attorney General of Texas provides some important information on what led up to the breach. Express Services also posted a website notice discussing the incident.

According to these sources, on June 21, 2024, Express Services detected suspicious activity within a company email account. In response, Express confirmed the security of its email system and then launched an investigation to learn more about the incident.

Through this investigation, Express Services confirmed that an unauthorized party was able to access two employee email accounts between May 7, 2024 and June 20, 2024. It was also determined that the unauthorized party copied certain information from the emails and attachments in the affected accounts.

After learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, Express Services reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted. While the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include your name, Social Security number, driver’s license number, financial information, medical information, and health insurance information.

On September 13, 2024, Express Services sent out data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the recent data security incident. These letters should provide victims with a list of what information belonging to them was compromised.
