What Caused the Florida Community Health Centers Data Breach?

The Florida Community Health Centers data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, FCHC’s filing with the Attorney General of Maine provides some important information on what led up to the breach. According to this source, on June 13, 2024, FCHC detected suspicious activity within its computer network. In response, FCHC secured its system and then launched an investigation with the help of third-party data security experts.

Initially, FCHC concluded its investigation on September 7, 2023, finding no evidence of unauthorized access. However, on October 12, 2023, subsequent investigation determined that hackers were able to gain access to the company’s computer network, including files containing confidential patient information. On November 20, 2023, FCHC posted notice of the incident on its website.

After learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, Florida Community Health Centers reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted. FCHC completed this process on April 10, 2024.

On July 1, 2024, Florida Community Health Centers sent out data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the recent data security incident. While the publicly available data breach letter from FCHC doesn’t mention what specific information was leaked, the personalized letters that were recently sent out should provide victims with a list of what information belonging to them was compromised.
