Florida Governor Ron DeSantis just issued an Executive Order mandating a 14-day self-quarantine or isolation period for certain airport travelers arriving in Florida from areas with “substantial community spread” to prevent further spread of the novel COVID-19 coronavirus. The Order specifically imposes restrictions on travelers from New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut.

During a press conference, Governor DeSantis stated that travelers will be met on board planes by law enforcement and personnel from the Florida Department of Health to be informed of the self-quarantine requirement and may be required to have their temperature checked. The governor added that passengers traveling to stay with family in Florida will not be exempt from the Executive Order. Governor DeSantis cited increased travel from New York to Florida after a shelter-in-place order was issued in New York on March 20 as one of the reasons for the decision to issue the Executive Order.

Persons isolating or quarantining under the Executive Order will be responsible for all costs associated with the same, including transportation, lodging, food, medical care, and any other expenses during the 14-day period. Violations will be considered a misdemeanor of the second degree, punishable by imprisonment of up to 60 days, a $500 fine, or both.
