Florida Update on Hurricane Ian

On September 29, 2022, Hurricane Ian made landfall near Cayo Costa, Fla., as a Category 4 hurricane, bringing record wind and storm surge to a four-county area in Southwest Florida. Other regions of the state have experienced significant rain, flooding, and tornadoes. Currently, about 2.6 million homes are without power. President Biden has approved Gov. DeSantis’ request for a Major Disaster Declaration, allowing Floridians to draw down federal dollars through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for 30 days. The governor has requested this be extended to 60 days, describing the recovery work in press briefings as the “biggest logistical effort” in Florida history.

The most recent press briefings from the governor’s office can be found here. The governor’s executive orders -- declaring that Florida is in a state of emergency -- can be found here.

McGuireWoods Consulting’s Florida team worked closely with companies and organizations navigating the challenges and opportunities related to Hurricanes Michael (2018) and Irma (2017). Hurricane Ian poses a monumental challenge for the State of Florida, and our team stands ready to assist.
