In May 2023, Gentex Corporation confirmed various reports that the company was the recent victim of a cyberattack which corroborates claims by the Dunghill ransomware gang that the group targeted Gentex a few months ago. While Gentex has not yet released a list of the affected data types, the hackers responsible for the attack claim to have obtained “employees’ personal data.” If Gentex confirms that employee data was leaked, the company will begin sending out data breach notification letters to all individuals who were impacted by the recent data security incident.

If you received a data breach notification from Gentex Corp., it is essential you understand what is at risk and what you can do about it. As we’ve discussed in prior posts, employers have a legal obligation to protect employees’ confidential information. When an employer’s negligence results in a data breach, all affected employees may be able to pursue a data breach lawsuit against the company. What We Know So Far About the Gentex Corp. Breach

News of a possible Gentex Corp. data breach was only recently released; however, what we know at this point comes from a TechTarget article as well as a Twitter post providing a list of data allegedly removed from the Gentex computer system. Evidently, in April 2023, the Dunghill ransomware gang added Gentex to its list of victims. And initially, there was no confirmation from Gentex that the hacker’s claims were true. However, in mid-May 2023, Gentex confirmed to reporters that the company had been the victim of a recent cyberattack. While the company hasn’t confirmed it was a ransomware incident, the Dunghill ransomware gang has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Gentex has not confirmed what, if any, sensitive employee information was leaked as a result of the attack. However, in a Twitter post, a user posts what claims to be a list of data removed from Gentex’s computer network, which includes “employees’ personal information.”

Gentex Corp. has not yet sent out data breach letters, most likely because the company is still in the process of investigating the incident. However, once the company confirms that employee data was leaked, it will send out data breach notifications to all employees whose information was compromised.
