The Houston Greater Business and Ethics Roundtable (GHBER) is pleased to announce its 2019 winner of the Bette Steed Leadership Award. It is Jim DeLoach. Bette Steed is the founder of GHBER and each year, our organization recognizes a local compliance and ethics practitioner for outstanding contributions to field. There is certainly no one more deserving than Jim DeLoach.

Jim’s work in the fields of risk management, internal controls and corporate governance are near legendary. In a 40-year career, Jim has authored over 250 articles on these topics. Working at Protiviti Inc. since 2002, he is a member of the Protiviti Solutions Leadership Team.

Jim wrote one of the first books on risk management, Enterprise-wide Risk Management: Strategies for Linking Risk and Opportunity, published by the Financial Times (FT) in June 2000 and was the first book written on the subject of risk management. He wrote a Protiviti guide for business risk management: frequently asked questions, launched in 2006 and today remains one of the most complete debates on the subject.

In the area of internal controls, Jim has been a leader not only on the financial aspects of internal controls but has also led the discussion on internal controls for compliance programs. He was an early thought leader around internal controls after the passage of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX), penning all four editions of the Sarbanes-Oxley Law Guide: Control Reporting Internal Requirements. These volumes are recognized as one of the most comprehensive treatment of the SOX compliance process around Section 404.

Jim has also been an integral part of thought leadership on the 2013 COSO Internal Controls Framework. He served on the COSO Advisory Board and contributed to the development of business risk management – integrated framework, the COSO project in monitoring and the recent update of Internal Control – Integrated Framework. In 2014, he co-authored a book sponsored by COSO, Improving Organizational Performance and Governance. – How the COSO Framework Can Help.

In the area of corporate governance, Jim’s work has been equally comprehensive. From 2012 through 2018, Jim was named to the National Association of Corporate Directors’ Directorship 100 list, recognizing him as one of the 100 most influential governance professionals in the boardroom community.  When he was so named in 2016, Joseph Tarantino, Protiviti President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), said, “Jim has evolved into one of the most well-respected and trusted leaders in the corporate governance arena. His deep insights into the integration of business strategy and risk management have positioned him as a top industry expert and thought leader. We’re extremely proud of Jim for receiving this honor yet again from the NACD, which further solidifies his role as a leader in the governance and risk management space and emphasizes his continued contributions to the industry.”

Yet for all these awards, accolades and honors, Jim is one of the most gracious gentlemen it has been my privilege to meet. He is ceaseless in giving his time, expertise and wisdom to others. All you have to do is ask. I am one of those lucky souls whose life and professional work is richer for having met Jim DeLoach.

The Award will be presented to DeLoach at the 2019 GHBER Ethics and Compliance Awards Dinner on May 16, 2019. I hope you can join myself, the Board and membership of GHBER, friends of Jim and his family in this signature recognition his contributions to field of ethics and compliance.
