What Caused the MEMC Data Breach?

The MEMC data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, MEMC’s filing with the Attorney General of Maine provides some important information on what led up to the breach. MEMC also posted a website notice discussing the incident.

According to these sources, on June 12, 2024, MEMC experienced unauthorized access to its computer network. In response, MEMC contained the incident, secured its network, and then launched an investigation with the help of external cybersecurity experts. MEMC also reported the incident to law enforcement.

Through its investigation, on September 18, 2024, MEMC learned that an unauthorized party had been able to remove certain files and folders from its network. It was subsequently determined that some of the data that was compromised included confidential information belonging to certain individuals.

After learning that sensitive data was accessible to an unauthorized party, MEMC reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and who was impacted. While the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include your name, Social Security number, driver’s license number, government ID number, passport number, and date of birth.

On September 27, 2024, MEMC sent out data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the recent data security incident. These letters should provide victims with a list of what information belonging to them was compromised.
