On April 7, 2023, HawaiiUSA Federal Credit Union (“HawaiiUSA”) filed a notice of data breach with the Attorney General of Maine after a cybersecurity incident leaked the personal information of more than 20,000 bank customers. News of the HawaiiUSA Federal Credit Union data breach is still fresh; however, what we know at this point comes from the company’s filing with the Attorney General of Maine. According to this source, HawaiiUSA recently completed its investigation into a recent cybersecurity incident in which an unauthorized party was able to access an employee’s email account. Evidently, HawaiiUSA first learned of the issue on December 12, 2022, which prompted the company to conduct an investigation with the assistance of a cybersecurity firm.

The HawaiiUSA investigation confirmed that one or more unauthorized parties were able to access the employee’s email account as the result of a successful social engineering attack. The investigation also revealed that information belonging to certain customers was available to the unauthorized party.

Upon discovering that sensitive consumer data was made available to an unauthorized party, HawaiiUSA Federal Credit Union began to review the affected files to determine what information was compromised and which consumers were impacted. HawaiiUSA completed this process on March 15, 2023. While the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include your name, Social Security number and financial account information.

On April 7, 2023, HawaiiUSA Federal Credit Union sent out data breach letters to all individuals whose information was compromised as a result of the recent data security incident.
