On January 12, 2023, Hayward Sisters Hospital, which operates under the name St. Rose Hospital, filed notice of a data breach with the Attorney General of California after learning that an unauthorized party accessed and removed files containing sensitive patient information from its computer network. Based on the company’s official filing, the incident resulted in an unauthorized party gaining access to consumers’ names, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, e-mail addresses, and home addresses. After confirming that consumer data was leaked, St. Rose Hospital began sending out data breach notification letters to all individuals who were impacted by the recent data security incident.

When you sought medical care at St. Rose Hospital, you didn’t think twice when providing hospital staff with your personal information. After all, healthcare workers need this information to provide you with the proper care. However, a hospital’s duty doesn’t end with treating the patient; it also needs to ensure that patient information stays safe. As we’ve discussed in previous posts, hackers have recently shown an increased interest in targeting healthcare providers due to the wealth of patient information these organizations have in their possession. It has therefore become critically important for hospitals to take heightened precautions to prevent these cyberattacks. In fact, healthcare providers that fail to securely store patient information that ends up leaked in a breach may be financially liable to patients through a data breach lawsuit.

What We Know So Far About the St. Rose Hospital Breach

The available information regarding the St. Rose Hospital breach comes from the company’s filing with the California Attorney General. According to this source, on about November 29, 2022, St. Rose Hospital detected suspicious activity within its computer network.
