HealthPlan Services, Inc. Files Notice of Data Breach Impacting Thousands

On April 28, 2023, HealthPlan Services, Inc. (“HPS”) filed a notice of data breach with the Attorney General of Maine after learning that a recent malware attack subjected confidential consumer information in the company’s possession to unauthorized access. Based on the company’s official filing, the incident resulted in an unauthorized party gaining access to consumers’ names, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, medical and health insurance information, financial account information and identification information. After confirming that consumer data was leaked, HPS began sending out data breach notification letters to all individuals who were impacted by the recent data security incident.

What We Know So Far About the HealthPlan Services Breach

News of the HealthPlan Services data breach is still fresh; however, what we know at this point comes from the company’s filing with the Attorney General of Maine. According to this source, on June 23, 2022, HPS learned that the company was the victim of a malware attack. While HPS has not publicly elaborated on how it came to learn of the incident, in response, HPS alerted law enforcement and then commenced an investigation in hopes of determining whether any consumer information was leaked as a result.

The HPS investigation confirmed that an unauthorized party had gained access to the company’s computer network. It was later determined that certain files containing confidential consumer information were accessible to the unauthorized party.

After making this discovery, HealthPlan Services began to review the affected files to determine what information was compromised and which consumers were impacted. While the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include your name, Social Security number, date of birth, medical and health insurance information, financial account information and identification information.
