The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (“OSHA”) issued a May 8th news release stating that it cited Spirit Aerosystems Inc. (“SAI”) for alleged violations.

SAI is based in Wichita, Kansas.

OSHA alleges that SAI:

  • Failed to implement feasible engineering controls to limit employee exposure to hexavalent chromium
  • Conduct periodic monitoring of employee exposure
  • Failed to establish protocols to ensure that employees removed contaminated personal protective equipment and clothing before leaving the work area
  • Failed to prevent exposure to hexavalent chromium during aircraft painting
  • Allowed the accumulation of hexavalent chromium on surfaces
  • Failed to ensure that employees respirators fit properly

The company is stated to have been assessed proposed penalties of $193,218.

SAI has 15 days from receipt of the citations and penalties to comply, request an informal conference with OSHA’s Area Director, or contest the findings before the Independent Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission.
