On August 11, 2023, Hub International Limited (“HUB”) filed a notice of data breach with the Attorney General of Maine after discovering that files on the company’s IT network were accessed and copied by an unauthorized party. In this notice, HUB explains that the incident resulted in an unauthorized party being able to access consumers’ sensitive information, which includes their names, Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, and financial account information. Upon completing its investigation, HUB began sending out data breach notification letters to all individuals whose information was affected by the recent data security incident.

If you received a data breach notification from Hub International Limited, it is essential you understand what is at risk and what you can do about it. As we’ve previously discussed, data breaches that result in leaked SSNs put consumers at a significantly higher risk of identity theft. However, there are steps you can take in the aftermath of a breach to limit these risks. A data breach lawyer can help you learn more about how to protect yourself from becoming a victim of fraud or identity theft as well as discuss your legal options following the Hub International data breach.

What Caused the Hub International Breach?

The Hub International data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, HUB’s filing with the Attorney General of Maine provides some important information on what led up to the breach. According to this source, on January 17, 2023, HUB detected suspicious activity within its computer network. In response, HUB isolated the affected systems and launched an investigation.

HUB’s investigation confirmed that certain systems within its network were accessed by an unauthorized party. It was also determined that some of these files were copied without authorization between December 2022 and January 2023.

After learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, Hub International reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted. HUB completed this process on July 27, 2023. While the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include your name, Social Security number, driver’s license number, and financial account information.

On August 11, 2023, Hub International sent out data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the recent data security incident. These letters should provide victims with a list of what information belonging to them was compromised.
