I Am Relieved To Be Getting Divorced, So Why Is This Making Me So Crazy?

Getting divorced is like unmooring a boat from the slip before starting your motor. Your marriage may not have been the best place for you, but it was a familiar place to dock and provided consistency, if not stability. It was the place you operated from and regularly returned to. All that changes when you are going through a divorce. You are now unmoored and if your power source hasn’t kicked in yet, you may sometimes feel disconnected and crazy.

Give yourself a break. This happens to everyone – divorce makes you crazy no matter how competent, confident, capable, or utterly happy you may be to be moving on from that precarious perch. The craziness will pass, and you will eventually reach another place to comfortably and safely dock. Your wits (and wit) will return to you when you most need them.

In the meantime, consider the following steps to help you get to a safe harbor:

  1. Change your scenery. It may be especially hard to move on if you are living in the former marital residence. Consider redecorating the room where you spend the most time. Hanging up new pictures, or just rearranging furniture can give you an inexpensive change of scenery.
  2. Discover a new activity. Whether it is a hiking club, book group, or joining a new fitness center, find something that becomes a routine to get you out of the house.
  3. Develop a support system. While it is ok to try and go it alone, don’t neglect the power of family and friends to keep you active, happy and smooth sailing through this difficult time.
