Igniting a Winning Workplace Culture at the 2017 Ethics & Compliance Virtual Conference

Workplace cultures manifest in the moments when employees are faced with ethical dilemmas. Strong cultures encourage employees to do the right things right; untended cultures can create response environments in which decisions fall along a spectrum of justifiability and culpability. In the former, ethical behavior is an organic byproduct of business as usual; in the latter, it can be left up to chance and circumstance. But why and how?

There are two elements at play when establishing a workplace culture. First, we have the employee – the individual who bears the onus of the decision being made. Second, we have the dilemma – the stakes, environment and context in which the individual is making the decision. Both of these elements contribute to workplace culture and, therefore, ethical or unethical workplace behavior.

This topic will be discussed at length and in detail by more than 25 compliance industry thought leaders at the 2017 Ethics & Compliance Virtual Conference.

The Psychology of Ethical Behavior

The conference kicks off this Thursday, November 9, with a keynote session from Shankar Vedantam, NPR social science correspondent and author of The Hidden Brain, and Carrie Penman, CCO and SVP, Advisory Services at NAVEX Global. The keynote will be a deep dive discussion into the psychology of ethical behavior and the science behind compliance. Shankar and Carrie will probe into what motivates otherwise honest people to make exceptions of themselves when it comes to ethical choices. They will also examine the various aspects of group dynamics and provide active, intentional steps compliance officers can take to shape culture and mitigate negative group behavior.

This is one of 23 thought-leadership sessions that will guide attendees through three learning tracks as well as a first-ever boot camp track designed to empower attendees with accelerated 30-minute sessions. The three learning sessions will be supplemented with five scheduled live chats in which industry experts will answer questions on anti-bribery and corruption standards, 21st century cyber security, 50-state compliance, third-party due diligence, and benchmarking for boards.

This year’s conference will conclude with a keynote address from Kristy Grant-Hart, author of the book “How to Be a Wildly Effective Compliance Officer.” This session will focus on the steps that CCOs can take to set strategic goals and build alliances across other parts of the enterprise to ensure these goals are understood and respected. Scheduling one’s time efficiently, dealing with crises, finding resources and deploying them astutely are critical skills for a CCO – Kristy will help put attendees on the track to mastering them.
