What Caused the Infosys McCamish Systems Data Breach?

The Infosys McCamish / Northwestern Mutual data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, Infosys McCamish’s filing with the Attorney General of California provides some important information on what led up to the breach. According to this source, IMS provides certain services to Northwestern Mutual that are primarily related to bank and corporate operations.

On November 2, 2023, IMS found that some of its systems had been encrypted as a result of a ransomware attack. In response, Infosys McCamish began working with third-party cybersecurity experts to investigate the matter and learn whether any confidential consumer information may have been compromised. IMS also notified federal law enforcement.

Through this investigation, IMS confirmed that there was unauthorized activity on its network between October 29, 2023 and November 2, 2023. It was later determined that during the period of unauthorized access, the hacker responsible for the attack was able to access files containing confidential Northwestern Mutual customer information.

After learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, Infosys McCamish Systems reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted.

On June 27, 2024, Infosys McCamish Systems sent out data breach letters to Northwestern Mutual customers who were affected by the recent data security incident. These letters should provide victims with a list of what information belonging to them was compromised.
