Yesterday, June 4, was the Iowa June primary election. Several incumbents faced primary challenges. All statehouse and Congressional incumbents won their primary contests.
Candidates are now slated for the upcoming general election.
Iowa U.S. District Races
Iowa Senate
Only two Senate incumbents had primaries – Republican Senator Waylon Brown won his primary in Senate District 30, and Democratic Senator Claire Celsi won her primary in Senate District 16. One open seat had a three-way Republican primary – District 26 where Kara Warme won.
Iowa House
Four Republican House incumbents had primaries – Representatives Bloomingdale, Meggers, Sexton, and Young all won their contested primaries. Six open seats had Republican primaries – Districts 13, 22, 24, 51, 64, and 91. Representative Levin was the only House Democrat incumbent with a challenger; she also won her primary. Two open seats had Democrat primaries – District 34 and District 44, both in Des Moines.
Several primaries featured multiple candidates, but the top finisher in each of those primaries won by enough of a margin to avoid the nomination going to the convention. None of the primary results seem likely to be changed by a recount; Representative Sexton won the closest Republican primary by 55 votes; Angela Schreader won the Republican primary in House District 36 by just 56 votes, but it was a low-vote primary, and she won 60% of the vote. Rob Johnson won the four-way Democratic primary in House District 34 with 759 votes, 47 more than the second-place finisher Samy El-Baroudi.

Libertarian and Independent candidates have until August to file for state races, although several Libertarians have filed already. Republicans and Democrats can nominate candidates after the primary in seats where no candidate filed for their primary. Both parties are likely to add a few candidates in this manner.
