On July 10, 2024, Janna Pharmacy LLC, better known to consumers as Apotheco Pharmacy Choice Torrance, filed a notice of data breach with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights after discovering that an unauthorized party was able to access portions of the company’s computer network. In this notice, Apotheco Pharmacy explains that the incident resulted in an unauthorized party being able to access consumers’ sensitive information. Upon completing its investigation, Apotheco Pharmacy began sending out data breach notification letters to all individuals whose information was affected by the recent data security incident.

What Caused the Janna Pharmacy Data Breach?

The Janna Pharmacy data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, at this early point, Apotheco Pharmacy’s filing with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights provides only very little information on what led up to the breach.

According to this source, we know that the incident involved the “unauthorized access / disclosure” of confidential information that was stored on an email system. However, because Janna Pharmacy has not provided additional details, we can’t be sure whether the breach involved its own computer system or whether the attack targeted one of the company’s vendors.

Either way, after learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, Janna Pharmacy reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted.

On July 10, 2024, Janna Pharmacy filed notice with the HHS-OCR. Typically, this is when companies send out data breach letters to all victims of the breach. However, the timeline in the Janna / Apotheco breach may be different. And while Apotheco Pharmacy Choice Torrance did not provide a list of data types in its notice with the HHS-OCR, the personalized data breach letters that the company will eventually be required to send out should provide victims with a list of what information belonging to them was compromised.
