What Caused the Justice Resource Institute Data Breach?

The JRI data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, JRI’s filing with the Attorney General of Massachusetts provides some important information on what led up to the breach. According to this source, JRI recently learned about an incident in which an unauthorized party was able to access some of its computer systems on February 15, 2024.

In response, JRI secured its system, isolated its network, and then launched an investigation with the help of third-party cybersecurity experts. Ultimately, through this investigation, JRI confirmed that an unauthorized party accessed portions of its network, including files containing confidential consumer information. JRI also determined that the unauthorized party was able to acquire some of the data.

After learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, the Justice Resource Institute reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted. JRI completed this process on May 29, 2024. While the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include your name, address, date of birth, Social Security number, and medical record information.

On June 18, 2024, the Justice Resource Institute sent out data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the recent data security incident. These letters should provide victims with a list of what information belonging to them was compromised.
