On March 9, 2022, the Los Angeles City Council held a special meeting to discuss amending the City’s proof-of-vaccine requirement. The Council voted to direct the City Attorney to prepare a new ordinance making the verification of vaccine cards voluntary for covered locations and removing the requirement for large outdoor events. Covered locations include restaurants with indoor dining, gyms, personal care establishments, and entertainment and recreation facilities. The motion passed 12-0, with 3 absent members. The Council did not hold a discussion on this matter before voting.
The SafePass LA program went into effect on November 8, 2021 and requires indoor restaurants, gyms, personal care establishments, and entertainment facilities to require that customers provide proof-of-vaccine before entering.
The current proof-of-vaccine requirements will remain in effect until the City Attorney prepares the ordinance modifying the requirements and the City Council votes on it, but this is the first step for Los Angeles to join LA County and the State of California in ending these requirements with COVID numbers declining.
