On April 10, 2025, Laboratory Services Cooperative (“LSC”) filed a notice of data breach with the Attorney General of Maine after discovering that an unauthorized third party gained access to parts of LSC’s network. In this notice, LSC explains that the incident resulted in an unauthorized party being able to access sensitive information belonging to some Planned Parenthood patients, including their names, Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, passport numbers, dates of birth, medical information, health insurance information, and financial account information. Upon completing its investigation, Laboratory Services Cooperative began sending out data breach notification letters to all individuals whose information was affected by the recent data security incident.

What Caused the Laboratory Services Cooperative Data Breach Affecting Planned Parenthood Patients?

The Laboratory Services Cooperative / Planned Parenthood data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, LSC’s filing with the Attorney General of Maine provides some important information on what led up to the breach. LSC also created a special website to provide Planned Parenthood patients with additional information about the incident.

According to these sources, on October 27, 2024, LSC detected unusual activity within its computer network. In response, Laboratory Services Cooperative immediately brought on a team of outside cybersecurity experts to investigate the incident.

Through this investigation, LSC confirmed that an unauthorized party was able to access and acquire certain files on its network. In February 2025, LSC determined that some of these files contained confidential Planned Parenthood patient information. Laboratory Services Cooperative also learned that employee and dependent data was compromised as a result of the breach.

After learning that sensitive patient and employee data was accessible to an unauthorized party, Laboratory Services Cooperative reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which individuals were impacted. While the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include your name, Social Security number, driver’s license number, passport number, date of birth, medical information, health insurance information, and financial account information.

Notably, the Laboratory Services Cooperative data breach did not impact every Planned Parenthood location. Based on the organization’s website notice, they provide services to Planned Parenthood locations in 31 states.

On April 10, 2025, Laboratory Services Cooperative sent out data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the recent data security incident. These letters should provide victims with a list of what information belonging to them was compromised.
