Latest Trump Travel Ban Halted

Two federal judges have blocked the latest immigration executive order from the Trump Administration that would have resulted in a new travel ban for certain travelers to the United States.

Signed by the President on March 6th, the new executive order would have imposed a 90-day travel ban for citizens of Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen, and also suspend the refugee program for 120 days. This latest EO was in response to the January 27th travel ban that was halted by the U.S. Federal District Court in Seattle.

The new order was intended to take effect today, but late yesterday a federal judge in Hawaii placed a temporary restraining order (TRO) on the new EO.  The TRO will be in place while the judge considers the case of the plaintiffs, which includes the state of Hawaii. The TRO will block the major components of the latest order: the temporary suspension of the refugee resettlement program and the 90-day travel ban.

On Thursday morning, a U.S. District Judge in Maryland also temporarily blocked parts of the new EO based on a challenge brought by three organizations and six individuals. This decision blocked the portion of president's order related to issuing visas to people from the six predominately Muslim countries targeted in the ban.
