What Caused the Liaison Data Breach?

The Liaison International data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, Liaison’s filing with the Attorney General of Montana provides some important information on what led up to the breach. According to this source, on May 27, 2024, Liaison detected suspicious activity within its computer network that it believed was related to an unauthorized actor having gained access to its computer system. In response, Liaison contained the incident and then launched an investigation to learn more about what happened and whether any consumer information may have been affected. Liaison also notified federal law enforcement.

Ultimately, Liaison’s investigation confirmed that an unauthorized party was able to access certain files containing confidential consumer information.

After learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, Liaison reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted.

On June 14, 2024, Liaison sent out data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the recent data security incident. While the publicly available Liaison data breach letter does not mention what type of information was leaked, the personalized letters that were recently sent out should provide victims with a list of what information belonging to them was compromised.
