On December 16, 2022, Louise W. Eggleston Center, Inc. (“Eggleston Center,” “Eggleston”) reported a data breach with the Attorney general of Maine after the company learned that hackers were able to access sensitive consumer information in its possession following a ransomware attack. According to Eggleston, the breach resulted in consumers’ full names, Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, non-driver ID numbers, financial account numbers and access codes, and military ID numbers being compromised. Recently, Eggleston sent out data breach letters to all affected parties, informing them of the incident and what they can do to protect themselves from identity theft and other frauds.

If you received services through Louise W. Eggleston Center, Inc. or were affiliated with the organization, your confidential information may now be in the hands of the hackers who carried out the recent ransomware attack. As we’ve discussed in prior posts, ransomware groups specifically target organizations known to have weak data security systems. As a result, those individuals who provided their information to these organizations are put at a greatly increased risk of identity theft and other frauds. However, as a data breach victim, you have rights, and it is important you understand what they are and what you can do to protect yourself.

What We Know About the Eggleston Services Data Breach

The available information regarding the Eggleston Services breach comes from the Maine Attorney General’s “Data Breach Notifications” page. According to this source, on around October 12, 2022, Eggleston determined that it had recently been the target of a ransomware attack. Evidently, the company first realized it had been the victim of a cyberattack when its computer systems suddenly were encrypted. The hackers also left a ransom note.

In response, the Louise W. Eggleston Center notified law enforcement, took steps to secure its systems, and began working with an outside cybersecurity company to investigate the incident. The focus of the company’s investigation was to learn more about the causes of the breach and what, if any, consumer information was leaked as a result of the attack.

Upon discovering that sensitive consumer data was made available to an unauthorized party, Eggleston Services began to review the affected files to determine what information was compromised and which consumers were impacted. While the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include your first and last name, Social Security number, driver’s license number, non-driver ID number, financial account number and access code, and military ID number.

On December 16, 2022, Eggleston Services sent out data breach letters to all individuals whose information was compromised as a result of the recent data security incident.
