What Caused the Lumen Technologies Data Breach?

The Lumen Technologies data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, Lumen’s filing with the Attorney General of Montana provides some important information on what led up to the breach. According to this source, on January 17, 2025, Lumen learned about a potential data security incident impacting its IT network. In response, Lumen secured its network and then launched an investigation to learn more about what happened and whether any confidential information may have been affected.

Through this investigation, Lumen learned that an unauthorized party was able to access its computer network between November 15, 2024 and December 4, 2024, including files containing confidential consumer information.

After learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, Lumen Technologies reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted. Lumen recently completed this process. While the publicly available data breach letter on the Montana Attorney General’s website does not mention the specific type of information that was leaked, on March 6, 2025, Lumen Technologies sent out personalized data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the recent incident. These letters should provide victims with a list of what information belonging to them was compromised.
