What Caused the Data Breach Affecting M&T Bank?

M&T Bank only recently announced the recent incident, and more information is expected in the near future. However, M&T’s filing with the Attorney General of Massachusetts provides some important information on what led up to the breach. However, as of August 16, 2023, the M&T Bank data breach letter had not yet been uploaded to the Massachusetts Attorney General’s “Data Breach Notification Letters” page.

Thus, all we know at this point is that the incident involved an electronic breach but did not involve any of M&T’s own computer systems.
