What Caused the Data Breach at Malouf Companies?

The Malouf data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, Malouf’s filing with the Attorney General of Vermont provides some important information on what led up to the breach. According to this source, on February 7, 2024, Malouf detected suspicious activity within its computer network after noticing that portions of its computer system were encrypted and inaccessible. In response, Malouf secured its systems and then launched an investigation to learn more about what happened.

Through this investigation, Malouf Companies learned that an unauthorized party was able to access the company’s computer network between September 18, 2023, and February 8, 2024, including files containing confidential consumer information.

After learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, Malouf reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted. Malouf completed this process on May 1, 2024.

On May 23, 2024, Malouf sent out data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the recent data security incident. While the publicly available Malouf data breach letter doesn’t mention the leaked information, the personalized letters sent to victims should provide a list of what specific information belonging was compromised.
