What Caused the MarineMax Data Breach?

The MarineMax data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, MarineMax’s filing with the Attorney General of Maine provides some important information on what led up to the breach. According to this source, on March 10, 2024, MarineMax learned that it had been the victim of a cyberattack that impacted portions of the company’s computer network.

In response, MarineMax secured its systems, notified law enforcement, and then launched an investigation with the help of third-party data security specialists in hopes of learning more about the incident, including whether any consumer data may have been compromised. Ultimately, the MarineMax investigation confirmed that an unauthorized party was able to access the company’s IT network, including files containing confidential consumer information.

After learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, MarineMax reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted. MarineMax is also providing victims of the breach with 24 months of free credit monitoring and identity restoration services, provided they sign up by the deadline of October 31, 2024.

On July 16, 2024, MarineMax sent out data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the recent data security incident. These letters should provide victims with a list of what information belonging to them was compromised.
