Following the U.S. Treasury’s announcements last week extending the April 15 deadline for payment of federal income tax, Maryland announced a similar measure, postponing until July 15, 2020 all tax payments owed by business and individual income taxpayers (See news release here).

Although Maryland has not announced an extension of the April 15 deadline for filing a state return, Maryland will automatically grant a corresponding state tax return extension to taxpayers who avail themselves of the automatic six-month federal return filing extension (although payment must be made by July 15 to avoid interest and penalties).

Payments for fiscal years ending January 1, 2020 through March 31, 2020 also are eligible for an automatic payment extension until July 15, 2020.

We will continue to monitor Maryland state tax developments.
