Canada plans to withdraw from the Kyoto Protocol, saying the treaty does “not represent the path forward for Canada,” according to Environment Minister Peter Kent. “It is now clear that Kyoto is not the path forward for a global solution to climate change; instead, it is an impediment,” he said. “We believe that a new agreement, with legally binding commitments for all major emitters, that allows us as a country to continue to generate jobs and economic growth, represents the path forward.” Kent said the Kyoto Protocol only covers 13 percent of global emitters and does not include the United States and China, two of the world’s largest emitters.
