On August 7, 2024, McLaren Health Care posted a website notice after discovering that it was the target of a recent ransomware attack. In this notice, McLaren explains that it is still investigating the incident and hasn’t yet ruled out the possibility of a data breach. If McLaren’s investigation confirms that patient data was leaked, it will send out data breach notification letters to all individuals whose information was affected by the recent data security incident.

Was There a McLaren Health Care Data Breach?

It’s too soon to tell if there was a McLaren Health Care data breach because the company only recently announced that it had experienced a cyberattack. However, McLaren’s website notice provides some important information on what led up to the breach. According to this source, on August 6, 2024, McLaren began experiencing issues with its IT network. In response, McLaren focused on bringing its systems back online. However, McLaren also began investigating the incident, quickly confirming that the disruption was the result of a cyberattack.

McLaren is still in the process of bringing all systems back online. And, while McLaren hasn’t confirmed that it was a ransomware attack, people have shared a screenshot of a ransom note on social media. Thus, while it’s too soon to determine what information may have been compromised, it appears as though the hackers responsible for the attack are claiming to have obtained confidential information.

As of August 7, 2024, McLaren Health Care was still working to bring all its systems back online as it was continuing its investigation. If the McLaren investigation ultimately confirms that patient or employee information was compromised, then it will be required to send out data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the recent incident. These letters should provide victims with a list of what information belonging to them was compromised.
