On July 30, 2019, the Michigan Department of Education (“MDE”) sent a Memorandum to the State Board of Education (“SBE”) enclosing Proposed Standards for the Preparation and Practice of Special Education Administrators. The Proposed Standards identify several proposed revisions to the standards that are currently identified in the Michigan Administrative Rules for Special Education (“MARSE”). If adopted as written, the Proposed Standards will require Special Education Directors to have a teacher certification with an endorsement in at least one area of special education. The Proposed Standards would also eliminate the Special Education Supervisor Certification. A full copy of the Proposed Standards may be found here

If you have not already provided input or want to provide additional input, we encourage you to submit your input soon. MDE is accepting Public Comment until 11:59 p.m. on Friday, October 4, 2019.  Public comments must be submitted online. A copy of the August 29, 2019 Memorandum from MDE containing the link to the Public Comment Survey may be found here. Please note that, although the Memorandum states that the Public Comment Period ended this last Sunday, September 29, 2019, the survey is still active.
