What Caused the MDLand International Data Breach?
The MDLand International data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, MDLand’s filing with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights provides only very limited information on what led up to the breach. Additionally, at this point, it does not appear as though MDLand has issued a press release or posted a website notice discussing the breach.
However, we know that the breach involved a “Hacking / IT incident” of patients’ electronic medical records. Additionally, in the company’s notice to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights, MDLand notes that there were 63,052 people affected by the breach.
While it’s possible that hackers breached MDLand’s computer network to access this information, that’s not the only explanation. It’s also possible that MDLand is reporting the breach on behalf of one of its vendors; however, it’s too soon to tell either way.
Regardless, after learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, MDLand International reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted.
On November 7, 2024, MDLand International filed notice of the breach with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights. This is usually around the time that companies will also send out personalized data breach letters to victims of the breach. However, the timeline in the MDLand breach could be different.
