MedInform, Inc. Announces Data Breach Affecting Cleveland Clinic Patients’ SSNs

On May 24, 2023, MedInform, Inc. filed a notice of data breach with the Attorney General of Massachusetts after learning that an unauthorized user was able to access confidential information belonging to Cleveland Clinic patients that were stored on the company’s computer network. Based on the company’s official filing, the incident resulted in an unauthorized party gaining access to consumers’ names, addresses, Social Security numbers, medical billing information, and financial account information. After confirming that consumer data was leaked, MedInform began sending out data breach notification letters to all individuals who were impacted by the recent data security incident.

What We Know So Far About the MedInform Breach

News of the MedInform data breach is still fresh; however, what we know at this point comes from the company’s filing with the Attorney General of Massachusetts, as well as a notice posted on the MedInform website. According to these sources, on December 21, 2022, MedInform detected suspicious activity within its computer network. In response, MedInform secured its systems and then launched an investigation into the incident in hopes of learning whether any consumer data was subject to unauthorized access.

The MedInform investigation confirmed that an unauthorized party was able to access the company’s computer system between December 5, 2022 and December 21, 2022. Further, MedInform was able to determine that some of the files that were accessible to the unauthorized party contained confidential information belonging to Cleveland Clinic patients.

Upon discovering that sensitive consumer data was made available to an unauthorized party, MedInform began to review the affected files to determine what information was compromised and which consumers were impacted. While the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include your name, address, Social Security number, medical billing information, and financial account information.

On May 24, 2023, MedInform sent out data breach letters to all individuals whose information was compromised as a result of the recent data security incident.
