What Caused the Members Trust Company Data Breach?
The Members Trust Company data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, MTC’s filing with the Attorney General of Maine provides some important information on what led up to the breach. MTC also posted a website notice discussing the incident and the company’s response.
According to these sources, on October 16, 2023, MTC learned that an unauthorized party was able to access certain employee email accounts. In response, MTC secured the affected accounts and then launched an internal investigation. MTC also worked with cybersecurity experts to ensure that the company’s email system was secure.
Ultimately, MTC’s investigation confirmed that an unauthorized party had been able to access various employee email accounts, including the attachments therein, between September 1, 2023 and October 17, 2023. Subsequently, MTC confirmed that some of the emails and attachments contained confidential consumer information.
After learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, Members Trust Company reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted. MTC completed this review process on January 30, 2024, and while the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include your name, date of birth, driver’s license number, state identification number, financial account number, Social Security number, credit or debit card number, passport number, and medical information.
On November 19, 2024, Members Trust Company sent out data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the recent data security incident. These letters should provide victims with a list of what information belonging to them was compromised.
