Pandemic conditions in Mexico are continuing to improve, prompting the federal government and local governments to ease restrictions on business and social activities in accordance with the four-tiered traffic light monitoring system, which is updated every other week.

For the second report in a row, no states are in red traffic light status, the strictest tier in the monitoring system. Eight of the nation’s 32 states are now in orange status, the second-strictest tier, compared with 10 states in orange status in the previous report for March 1–14, 2021. In addition, 21 states are in yellow traffic light status, and 3 states—Campeche, Chiapas, and Sonora—are in green traffic light status, at which all restrictions are lifted.

This chart presents the traffic light status of each state, and, as applicable, variations between federal and local traffic light statuses based on publications of the federal Ministry of Health and status reports provided by each state.

Below is a map for the period of March 15–28, 2021, indicating the COVID-19 risk level in each of the states.

Mexico March 15 2021 to March 28 2021 Phase 3 Map

According to federal data, as of March 15, 2021, there had been an estimated 2,361,702 positive cases and 194,944 deaths due to COVID-19 in Mexico since the pandemic began. On the other hand, 1,711,931 people had recovered from COVID-19, and 4,404,608 COVID-19 vaccine doses had been applied, which represents 3.5 percent of Mexico’s population. The federal Ministry of Health and state governments are urging the population to continue taking care and complying with sanitary measures during the “spring break” vacation period.
