What Caused the Middlefield Bank Data Breach?

The Middlefield Bank data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, Middlefield Bank’s filing with the Attorney General of Massachusetts provides some important information on what led up to the breach. Middlefield Bank also posted a website notice describing the incident.

According to these sources, on April 12, 2023, Middlefield Bank detected a possible data security incident impacting some of the company’s computer systems. In response, Middlefield Bank began working with outside cybersecurity specialists to investigate the incident and any potential impact on consumer information in its possession.

The Middlefield Bank investigation confirmed that an unauthorized party was able to access files on its IT network between April 11, 2023 and April 12, 2023. Middlefield Bank also determined that the unauthorized party was able to access some files containing confidential information belonging to certain employees and customers.

After learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, Middlefield Bank reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted. Middlefield Bank completed this process on November 21, 2023. While the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include your name, Social Security number, financial account information, driver’s license information, passport number, biometric data, date of birth, payment card information, medical information, and username and password.

On December 21, 2023, Middlefield Bank sent out data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the recent data security incident. These letters should provide victims with a list of what information belonging to them was compromised.
