On June 15, 2023, Mondelēz Global LLC filed a notice of data breach with the Attorney General of Maine after the company learned that an incident at a law firm employed by the company resulted in Mondelēz employee data being accessible to an unauthorized party. Based on the company’s official filing, the incident resulted in an unauthorized party gaining access to employees’ Social Security numbers, first and last names, addresses, dates of birth, marital status, genders, employee identification numbers, and Mondelēz retirement and thrift plan information. After confirming that employee data was leaked, Mondelēz began sending out data breach notification letters to all individuals who were impacted by the recent data security incident.

If you received a data breach notification from Mondelēz, it is essential you understand what is at risk and what you can do about it. To be clear, the incident did not involve unauthorized access to the Mondelēz IT network. However, confidential information provided to Mondelēz by its employees was leaked, subjecting all affected employees to an increased risk of identity theft. What We Know So Far About the Mondelēz International Breach

News of the Mondelēz International data breach is still fresh; however, what we know at this point comes from the company’s filing with the Attorney General of Maine. According to this source, Mondelēz retained the services of the law firm Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner LLP (“Bryan Cave”) to provide advice on customary legal matters. In order to adequately advise Mondelēz, Bryan Cave was given personal information about Mondelēz employees.

On February 27, 2023, Bryan Cave detected suspicious activity within its IT network. After conducting an investigation, Bryan Cave confirmed that the unauthorized actors were able to access certain files containing confidential Mondelēz employee information between February 23, 2023 and March 1, 2023. Bryan Cave then informed Mondelēz of the incident on March 24, 2023.

After receiving additional information from Bryan Cave, on May 22, 2023, Mondelēz was able to determine which employees were affected. Mondelēz International then began to review the affected files to determine what information was compromised. While the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include your name, Social Security number, address, date of birth, marital status, gender, employee identification numbers, and Mondelēz retirement and thrift plan information.

On June 15, 2023, Mondelēz International sent out data breach letters to all individuals whose information was compromised as a result of the recent data security incident.
