On July 31, 2023, MW Components filed a notice of data breach with the Attorney General of Texas after discovering that an unauthorized party was able to access certain information contained on its computer network. In this notice, MW Components explains that the incident resulted in an unauthorized party being able to access consumers’ sensitive information, which includes their names, Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, financial account information, health insurance information and medical information. Upon completing its investigation, MW Components began sending out data breach notification letters to all individuals whose information was affected by the recent data security incident.

What Caused the MW Components Breach?

The MW Components data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, MW Components’ filing with the Attorney General of Texas provides some important information on what led up to the breach. According to this source, on March 26, 2023, MW Components learned that it was the target of a ransomware attack. In response, MW Components secured its systems, notified law enforcement and then launched an investigation to learn more about the nature and scope of the cyberattack.

Subsequently, MW Components was able to confirm that an unauthorized party was able to access certain files contained on the company’s IT network between March 1, 2023 and March 26, 2023.

After learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, MW Components reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted. MW Components completed this review on May 19, 2023. While the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include your name, Social Security number, driver’s license number, financial account information, health insurance information and medical information.

In late July 2023, MW Components sent out data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the recent data security incident. These letters should provide victims with a list of which information of theirs was compromised.
