The National Advertising Division (NAD) started 2020 with updated fees and the announcement that new procedures would be implemented in the coming months.

Effective January 1, 2020, the self-regulatory body’s pricing structure to bring a challenge is:

  • Under $250 million in gross annual revenue, a challenge initiation fee of $10,000
  • National Partner, a $25,000 fee
  • Under $5 billion in gross annual revenue, a $30,000 fee
  • Over $5 billion in gross annual revenue, a $35,000 fee

Appeals to the National Advertising Review Board (NARB) will cost $25,000. Filing fee waivers or partial waivers are still available if economic hardship is demonstrated.

The NAD also announced “process improvements” slated for 2020 that “will make filing challenges more efficient to meet industry needs,” including a new online submission process as well as the creation of “new tracks for faster resolution of NAD challenges.”

Why it matters: Advertisers should be aware of the changes in pricing structure, particularly the addition of the new “under $250 million” category, intended to “encourage participation from small businesses and strengthen industry self-regulation,” the NAD said.
