On September 18, 2023, Nuance Communications, Inc. (“Nuance”) filed a notice of data breach with the Attorney General of Texas after discovering that the company was one of many affected by the MOVEit vulnerability. In this notice, Nuance explains that the incident resulted in an unauthorized party being able to access consumers’ sensitive information, which includes their names, medical information and health insurance information. Upon completing its investigation, Nuance began sending out data breach notification letters to all individuals whose information was affected by the recent data security incident.

What Caused the Data Breach Affecting Nuance Communications Customers?

The Nuance Communications data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. And while Nuance’s filing with the Attorney General of Texas provides little information on what led up to the breach, various news outlets have reported on the incident. According to these sources, the breach involved the popular file-sharing application MOVEit. Back in May 2023, the creator of MOVEit, Progress Software, announced a previously unknown vulnerability within MOVEit that allowed hackers to access information stored on companies’ MOVEit servers, including Nuance’s.

After learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, Nuance Communications reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted. While the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include your name, medical information and health insurance information.

Evidently, Nuance submitted notice of the breach on behalf of the following organizations:

  • Atrium Health
  • Catawba Valley Medical Center
  • Charlotte Radiology
  • Duke University Health System
  • DLP Central Carolina Medical Center
  • ECU Health
  • FirstHealth of the Carolinas
  • Mission Health System
  • Novant Health
  • Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center
  • UNC Health
  • Wake Radiology Diagnostic Imaging
  • WakeMed Health & Hospitals

On September 18, 2023, Nuance Communications sent out data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the recent data security incident. These letters should provide victims with a list of what information belonging to them was compromised.
