In the movie “Back to School,” Thornton Melon, played by Rodney Dangerfield laments that his second wife, Vanessa is a pain and gives a “great headache.” While participants, namely business owners, want a self-directed brokerage account within a 401(k) plan, it has enough issues out there that I can’t recommend them. A 401(k) plan isn’t a casino and I still believe participants will do better for their retirement savings by using the fund’s core lineup of mutual funds. This article is about the hidden dan- gers of 401(k) plans in offering self-direct- ed brokerage accounts to plan participants.
