What Caused the Perry Johnson Mortgage Company Data Breach?

The Perry Johnson Mortgage Company data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, PJM’s filing with the Attorney General of Montana provides some important information on what led up to the breach. According to this source, PJM recently learned that an IT vendor used by the company experienced a data security incident between March 27, 2023 and May 2, 2023. Evidently, during this period, an unauthorized party was able to access the vendor’s system, where PJM customer information was stored.

In response, PJM launched an internal investigation with the help of outside cybersecurity experts to learn more about the incident and determine what information was affected and who it belonged to.

Initially, PJM didn’t believe its customer information was leaked. However, subsequent investigation confirmed that certain data was stored on a compromised system. And, on June 14, 2024, PJM confirmed that customer data was among those which was accessible to the unauthorized party.

After learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, Perry Johnson Mortgage Company reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted. PJM completed this process on June 26, 2024.

On July 22, 2024, Perry Johnson Mortgage Company sent out data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the recent data security incident. While the publicly available data breach letter on the Montana Attorney General’s website doesn’t mention what type of information was leaked, the personalized data breach letters that were recently sent out should provide victims with a list of what information belonging to them was compromised.
