What Caused the Data Breach Affecting Pharmacy Partners?

The Pharmacy Partners data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. Unfortunately, Pharmacy Partners’ filing with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights provides very little information, and the company has not yet posted a website notice explaining the incident.

However, we know that the incident involved a “Hacking / IT incident” of a network server. We also can assume that the breach involved victims’ protected health information, as only those breaches impacting the protected health information of more than 500 people need to be reported to the HHS-OCR. What we don’t know is whether the incident stemmed from an attack against Pharmacy Partners’ computer systems or whether hackers targeted a vendor Pharmacy Partners uses to perform certain services.

Regardless, after learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, Pharmacy Partners reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted.

On November 7, 2023, Pharmacy Partners sent out data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the recent data security incident. These letters should provide victims with a list of what information belonging to them was compromised.
