No, the Plastics Pact has nothing to do with the clique from the movie Mean Girls. Created in 2020, the U.S. Plastics Pact is a group of government agencies, citizen organizations, and businesses, headed by the World Wildlife Fund and The Recycling Partnership. On January 25, the Pact released its Problematic and Unnecessary Materials List. While first on its list is plastic cutlery, number two is intentionally added PFAS.
The American Chemistry Council responded to the Pact’s list by claiming that it “lacked a transparent third-party, data-driven and scientific approach, and its process seems to be rooted in ideology and a predetermined, misguided outcome.” The Council has previously advocated a more nuanced approach to PFAS regulation.
